Avoiding pesticides and increasing nutritional content have been the usual arguments for eating organic fruits and vegetables. Now I have heard another reason to eat organic meat.
Apparently, many growers of chickens feed the birds grain laced with arsenic. I have often wondered why arsenic would show up in my patients when we tested for heavy metals. We would laughingly wonder if someone was poisoning the patient surreptitiously.
Well, it turns out to be true. But it is not “the butler” who did it. Rather it is the chicken the patient had been eating.
As a reminder, arsenic is not meant in significant amounts for human consumption. You have control over which chickens you buy when you purchase them yourself. However, if you eat out frequently, you may want to monitor how much chicken you order from restaurants because of this situation.
