On October 15th the USDA approved the deregulation of Dow’s herbicide Enlist Duo, a toxic blend of 2,4-D and glyphosate, “for use on corn and soybeans genetically engineered to tolerate both 2,4-D and glyphosate—even though the pesticide has been linked to immune system cancers, Parkinson’s disease, endocrine disruption, and reproductive problems.”
What are these compounds? 2,4-D is part of Agent Orange. Remember the horrifying photos of children with congenital defects from the spraying of Agent Orange during the Viet Nam war? And Glyphosate, which sterilizes the ground on which it is sprayed (thereby reducing the soil’s ability to grow healthy crops).
How does it do that?
- Chelates trace minerals
- Dismantles plant defenses
- Destroys beneficial microorganisms
- Promotes pathogenic organisms
- Remains in soil and influences future crops
As if that is not bad enough, recent research suggests the damage glyphosate does to our body’s ability to detoxify could mean glyphosate is part of “most of the diseases and conditions associated with a Western diet, which include gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.” *Entropy, 2013, 15(4), 1416-1463.
Soy and corn, which already are over 80% genetically-modified, potentially could become our worst poisons. If you are unhappy about this, please write your Congresspeople. Copy your letter to Senator John Tester (D-MT) who is campaigning for responsible government action.
